Snow for Containers

The Snow for Containers project was created to expand Snow Software product offering with licence compliance solutions for containerised environments. I was assigned to the production team to take over the work from the previous designer, follow the product testing and prepare for the next phase of production.

Business case

When I joined the project, the previous designer and production team had already built a proof of concept. Our goal was to start testing and find the next valuable feature for our customers.

Initial work

Absorb as much knowledge as possible on the unique feature of IT infrastructure using Containers. Used software vendor documentation, online training video, research and interview report from the previous designer and project kickstart documentation. My goal was to understand the customer goals and how they would navigate within our solution.

The challenge

Define with the product owner and the team where the realistic next step for the product versus nice to have a feature we could build in the future. In terms of UX design, we had to advocate with the team the value of making our current capabilities useful against building further data discovery capabilities.

Approach

We focused on data visualisations and pivot views in order to provide our customers with the most useful insights. During this project, I tested and presented several alternatives for visualisation and navigations pathway to the design team. We agreed on a system that would be consistent with the solution we were also building for our SaaS compliance product.

Solution

Together with the design team, we expanded the product by adding a layer of data visualisation and a set of data pivot views. This allows the customer to look at their container compliance from different angles. This solution was aligned to be consistent with the rest of our snow atlas product offering. We proposed a road map to the product managers who included it as part of the value generation effort for the future.

Learnings

Implementing a better UX is not always a given consideration in a project launch. We had to do a lot of advocacies for our users and showcase how little changes could improve the existing experience without needing to expand the capabilities of the product. We also had to show how our changes would fit and allow the product to scale as more use cases would be added to it.
